Announcements

Monday, November 2

Students have been completing Grammar Unit 1 over the past three days. Today they finished lessons 5 and 6. The PYP Lab has been reserved for lunch on Thursday so that students can come in to take AR quizzes. All quizzes and Reader's Book Records are due this Friday.

Thursday, October 22

Students finished The Giver this week and will be starting an in-class writing project tomorrow. They do not have a free write tonight. A reminder that their AR quizzes are due by Friday, November 6.

Wednesday, October 14

Daily journal entries are available under the Reader's Workshop tab for The Giver. Daily homework assignments have been posted on the calendar.

Monday, October 12

Students began reading The Giver today in class. They need to finish Chapter 2 and write a paragraph response about the setting in their journals by the beginning of class tomorrow.

Thursday, October 8

Students worked on publishing their poems today in class. Whatever they did not finish needs to be completed at home tonight. We will be sharing our poems tomorrow in class. We will begin reading The Giver as a class on Monday.

Wednesday, October 7

Students need to come to class with their poem in final draft form and ready to publish. We will be publishing in the computer lab tomorrow; anything not finished by the end of class must be completed at home. Published poems are due at the beginning of class on Friday. Students should also continue reading at home and taking AR quizzes as needed.

Monday, October 5

Students are in the process of conferencing with Ms. Dixon and completing peer response groups to continue editing and revising their poems. We will be publishing them in class on Thursday and celebrating our work on Friday.

Thursday, October 1

Students completed Day 5 of our poetry unit. Instead of writing a free write tonight for homework, they need to write a narrative poem in their journals.

Tuesday, September 29

Students have been working on the first Writer's Workshop unit of the year, which focuses on poetry. They  need to write a one-page free write in their journal tonight (Entry 1.12).

Thursday, September 24

Today students completed the district assessment for a narrative piece of writing. Tomorrow we will begin our first Writer's Workshop of the year, which will focus on poetry. Tonight, rather than writing a free write, students need to find a poem online or from a poetry book and bring it to class tomorrow. The poem should be printed and glued into their journals or handwritten for Entry 1.8.

Monday, September 21

Students completed the final day of our Launching Reader's Workshop unit and had time to silent read. A reminder that we will be going to the library tomorrow to take any summer quizzes that have not been taken yet. Quizzes taken after tomorrow will only count toward the reading requirements for first marking period.

Wednesday, September 16

Students began their first Reader's Workshop today.  A copy of the PowerPoint is available under the "Launching Unit" sections under "Reader's Workshop".

Friday, September 11

Yesterday, students completed an On-Demand argument writing prompt. They will complete the same prompt again at the end of the year to show growth in their writing skills. Today, they decorated their Writer's Notebooks, set up their journals, and wrote their first journal entry for the year. The prompt was, "How do you feel you have grown as a reader/writer after completing 7th grade? How do you hope to grow as a reader/writer throughout 8th grade?".

Reminders: Summer AR quizzes are due no later than Tuesday, September 22. All students should have an AR book in class each day. Students must read 5 AR books at their reading level and take quizzes by Friday, November 6 (this does not include the three summer reading books).

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Today students were given an introduction to the class and completed an information sheet about themselves and their reading habits. The syllabus needs to be signed and returned by Friday, September 11.
